LINCOLN, NEB. (Jan. 22, 2009) —An image that captures the beauty of a Nebraska sunset won the grand prize in Nebraska Tourism’s Byways Geopicting Contest.
La Vista, Nebraska resident Bruce Hoye took the image when he and his wife were taking in the annual Sandhill Crane migration. They’d packed up their gear and were in the car when his wife noticed the sunset over a nearby lake.
“When the wife saw the sunset, she made me turn around the car,” Hoye said. “Am I glad she did.”
Hoye said the Nebraska Tourism Byways Geopicting Contest was the first he’d heard about geopicting. He’s been involved in geocaching since 2001 and dabbling in amateur photography since 2002. He said it seemed natural to merge his two hobbies for the contest.
“I like the idea (of the contest) because it’s a way of documenting your travels,” Hoye said. “I’d never heard of the Nebraska byways. The contest got me interested in seeing more of Nebraska.”
Hoye said he’s next hoping to explore the Cowboy Trail, south of the Outlaw Trails Byway, and the Nebraska Sandhills.
